What Is Peace Worth? A Visit to Iceland Might Make You Wonder

When people think about Iceland, they tend to picture the dramatic things: erupting geysers, powerful waterfalls, glaciers and volcanic landscapes. They are all here, and they deserve their reputation. But one of the most valuable things you may experience in Iceland is much harder to photograph.

It is the feeling of being somewhere peaceful.

Iceland ranked first in the 2026 Global Peace Index. You do not need to know that before arriving, and you certainly do not need to spend your holiday thinking about rankings. But as you travel around the country, you may begin to notice the easy rhythm of its towns and villages, and how comfortable it feels to take your time.

 What is peace worth?

It is an almost impossible question to answer. Peace is woven into ordinary days, which makes it easy to overlook. It can mean having the freedom to make plans, spend time with people you love, and enjoy the small things without feeling that every moment must be hurried or accounted for.

Perhaps that is why another Icelandic ranking is so interesting. In the 2026 World Happiness Report, Iceland came second. This report asks people who live here to assess the quality of their own lives. It does not tell us what makes any one person happy, but it does suggest that Icelanders value the life they have built on this island.

Visitors cannot experience a country in quite the same way as the people who live there. You can, however, catch glimpses of everyday Iceland alongside its famous sights: families meeting at a swimming pool, friends lingering over a meal, or a small community going about its day with a great landscape just beyond the window.

Make room for the moments between

Reykholt sits close to some of Iceland’s best-known places. Gullfoss and Geysir are well worth the journey, but the hours between the planned stops can be just as enjoyable. Take your time over lunch. Visit a greenhouse where tomatoes grow in geothermal warmth. Go for a soak, or return early enough to enjoy an unhurried evening.

At Blue Hotel Fagrilundur and Blue View Cabins, we hope you will find a comfortable place to do exactly that. Explore the Golden Circle, follow the roads that interest you, and give yourself time simply to enjoy being here.

How much is peace worth? We cannot put a number on it. But after a few days in Iceland, you may find it is one of the things you remember most.
